History of the Course
After conducting series of meetings in Government Polytechnic, Pune and MBIL in the period 2004 to 2006, revising the draft of MOU by the then HODs, experts from education and industries, this center was established by Government Polytechnic, Pune (GPP) and Mercedes Benz India Pvt.Ltd, Chakan, Pune in 2006 (MBIL).
After due approval of the then Director of Technical Education, Mr. Pasalkar, the then Joint Director of Technical Education, Pune Region and ex officio Chairman of Governing council of Government Polytechnic, Pune – Mr. S.K. Mahajan (now Director of Technical Education Dr. S.K. Mahajan) and the then Principal Government Polytechnic, Pune – Mrs. Veena Gore, signed this MOU. From MBIL, the then Director After-Sales Mr. Devdatta Chandawarkar, and Mr. Raghunandan Pendse, GM Legal Affairs & Company Secretary ,signed this MOU. The amendments and extensions were also signed in the mean period. The present extension will expire in March 2018. This is brief history of the establishment and successfully running the center.
The intake was 20 (2006-2013- 8years) and now it is 40 (2014-15 and 2015-16 -2 years). This is tenth year. This center is a benchmark and flagship for Public Private Partnership for skill development in Maharashtra as well as in India. This is an example of blending Government Social Responsibilities – GSR and Corporate Social Responsibilities- CSR for creating opportunity of employment in emerging technologies. Based on the experience, the partner company, MBIL two more centers were established at Govt. Polytechnic, Aurangabad in 2008 and Government Engineering College, Thiruanantpuram, Kerala in 2012. As on date, intake at these two centers is 20 each.The company wishes to establish one more center in north India. It can be in Jaipur.
The entry level eligibility for this one year advanced diploma course is diploma/degree in Engineering/technology from AICTE approved institutes. The branches Mechanical or equivalent as well as Electronics or equivalent are eligible. However the Civil /Computer branches are not eligible. Medium of instruction is English. Admission is by entrance exam only. At present intake is 40. Out of 40, 10 are sponsored form dealers of Mercedes Benz India Pvt. Ltd. Remaining 30 are selected from entrance exam conducted at four centres Pune, Delhi, Ahmedabad, Chennai. The MBIL dealers’ campus is selected to conduct examination. Representatives from GPP conduct the examination. The expense of marketing and exam are borne by GPP. The fees is Rs. 90,000/- and accepted in two installments. Course starts in October and ends in September. Second installment is accepted in January. From 2015 onwards, MBIL has declared scholarships for three economically weak candidates and one girl candidate irrespective of economic conditions. The scholarship is worth Rs. 1,50,000/- which not only sponsors his fees, but his living expenses, too. Three candidates from this center stood eligible and bagged scholarship. Since no girl candidate took admission this year, it was diverted to needy girl candidate in other center.
Mercedes Benz Plant does not absorb all candidates but recruits candidates as per plant requirement. In 10 years, 180 candidates from all over India were trained at our center out of these; about 10 were recruited by Mercedes plant, Chakan, near Pune (MBIL). About 90% candidates are working in automotive sector, some were recruited by dealers of MBIL as well as other brands of automobiles, some joined manufacturing plants of other brands even some were offered in automotive R & D sector, some joined abroad as the certificate is valid in all countries. Remaining 10% candidates did PG in India, some preferred to take higher studies in abroad and some became entrepreneurs.
